Erik Jones: The Political Economy of the Euro Crisis (MPIfG Vortrag)
Datum: 12.01.2012
Ort: Köln
The problems of European sovereign debt markets are presenting the euro with its greatest challenge. Two questions recur: Why didn?t European countries respond more quickly and more decisively to the problems as they emerged? How will the process of European integration progress from here? The answers to these questions are obviously both political and economic. They reflect the identity and solidarity of Europe as a political entity and concern the efficiency or stability of European markets. By understanding the crisis and its implications, we should therefore gain insight into what the process of European integration is all about.
Erik Jones is Professor of European Studies at the SAIS Bologna Center and Director of the Bologna Institute for Policy Research. He is author of The Politics of Economic and Monetary Union (2002), Economic Adjustment and Political Transformation in Small States (2008) and co-editor of The Oxford Handbook on the European Union (2012).
